Rayburn Country's close location to the National Forests, as well as land held in timber trusts provide the habitat that draws many birds to Southeast Texas giving a rise to birding in East Texas.   Located in the heart of the Piney Woods of East Texas makes Rayburn Country Resort a great place to stay, or live and enjoy the Texas Coastal Birding Trail, or just walk one of the local trails to also find and watch birds.  Lake Sam Rayburn and other area lakes are sometimes resting points of water birds heading south for the winter, or north for the summer.  Several roads including FM-1007 which runs through Rayburn Country Resort is part of the Texas Forest Trail, a system of “road trails” in the State of Texas that give a driving tour of the road themes.   Canoe trips down the local rivers in the summer offer a unique experience to view East Texas from a “road” that not many people see.  Explore the Big Thicket just a short drive away for a look at how East Texas looked around the early 1800’s.  Backpack the Trail Between the Lakes, or just hike in the pine forests, enjoying the lakes, rivers, creeks, and the hardwood bottoms and seeing the diverse flora, fauna and scenery that will keep you coming back again, and again, until your decide to call Rayburn Country Home!

Many different types of birds can be found around the lake.  You might even see a pelican cruising the lake.  Bluebirds enjoy the lake area.  Nothing like watching the lake and seeing what you might see, a goose swims by.  Even butterflies enjoy resting.
